Elected in 1988 … 1957 Suffern H.S. graduate … wrestling coach who produced a string of champions at Ramapo and Pearl River high schools … at Ramapo, he started the program in 1969, and by 1972, the Gryphons had won the New York State title … they also won a County title in 1974 and three Section 9 crowns … Ramapo had 13 state place-winners in 13 years under Canty, and five of his wrestlers earned All-America berths … at Pearl River from 1962 to ‘67, Canty led the Pirates to two County titles and a victory that snapped Suffern’s 87-match winning streak … when he left coaching in 1980, he had produced 40 County, 28 Section 9 and four New York State individual champions … he was influential in starting summer freestyle wrestling in Rockland and Section 9, and coached the New York State team at the national freestyle championships in 1973 and ‘74 … as a wrestler at Suffern, Canty won County and Section 9 titles in 1956 and ‘57 … came out of retirement a few years ago to coach the East Ramapo (combined Spring Valley and Ramapo) wrestling team.
