1990 inductee…1952 Haverstraw H.S. graduate…top-notch all-around athlete who derived his greatest notoriety as a baseball pitcher…turned down full scholarships to North Carolina State, Colgate, Michigan State and Fordham to sign with the Brooklyn Dodgers…also had turned down a bonus offer from the New York Yankees…playing for Class C Great Falls, Mont., he charted a 12-8 record in 1953…in 1954 for Great Falls, he improved to 15-7… in 1955, he won 19 and lost 7 for Newport News, Va., of the Class B Piedmont League and was named team MVP and a league All-Star … a shoulder and nerve injury sustained in Puerto Rican winter league ball ended his pro career, but he later pitched semipro for the Emerson-Westwood Merchants in the Metropolitan Baseball League … he once pitched the team to fifth place in a national tournament, and earned league MVP honors one season in the 1960s … at Haverstraw H.S., Schassler was an All-Rockland baseball player for three years, and an All-County basketball player for two years … he was a starting right end in football as a sophomore and junior … didn’t play football senior year upon request of colleges that offered him scholarships for baseball and basketball … Schassler also ran track for three years and played tennis for two years.
