1995 inductee … Haverstraw H.S., Class of 1948 … excelled in five sports at Haverstraw … was captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams … three-year varsity performer in football, second-team All-County one year and Honorable Mention another … also played three years of varsity basketball, making second-team All-County one year … in baseball, he also earned three varsity letters and achieved second-team All-County once … he gained one All-Rockland berth in track and competed three years on the varsity in that sport … also played on the golf team for two years … he pitched six one-hitters for the Red Raiders’ baseball team … Urban was the top football punter in the Rockland PSAL for two years … he also punted as a freshman at Syracuse University … he signed a baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox while still in high school, but the commissioner of major league baseball, Happy Chandler, nullified the transaction … Urban, however, could not play his senior year because he was considered a professional … he later managed Little League teams for three years and Babe Ruth League teams for eight seasons … he also coached Catholic Youth Organization basketball for eight years, and was a golf teaching pro on public and private courses.
