Charter member, elected in 1974 … Nyack H.S., Class of 1930 … a superstar for Nyack in the 1920s, Artopee earned 11 letters in football, basketball and baseball, and also competed in track and field … he starred as a fullback and first baseman, captained the football, basketball and baseball teams his senior year, and also was a stalwart in the 100- and 220-yard dashes and the high jump in track … after high school, Artopee continued to excel athletically … played for the famed Nyack Alumni football team, which allowed only two points for the entire season en route to winning the 1933 county championship … he played first base for the Lincoln (N.J.) Giants semipro team (with fellow Hall of Famer Horace Tyrus), as well as for the Congers Liberty Athletic Club and the top-notch semipro teams of Dr. Pierre Bernard… Artopee also shone for the St. Philip’s A.M.E. Zion Church amateur basketball team, one of the county’s top teams of the early 1930s.
