Inducted in 1977 … graduated from Haverstraw H.S. in 1917 … former professional and semipro baseball player … at Haverstraw, he starred in baseball, football, basketball and track … spent two years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. … at RPI his sophomore year, he was starting quarterback on the football team, a starting forward in basketball and batted a team-leading .425 as a shortstop for the baseball team … in 1919 he received an athletic scholarship from Fordham University, where he quarterbacked the football team and played second base in baseball … helped lead Fordham to the Eastern Football Championship game, where the Rams bowed to Lafayette, 31-14 … during the summers from 1918 to 1923, Shankey played semipro baseball for the Haverstraw Knights of Columbus team … once hit two home runs in one game against former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Milton Gaston … he captained the Haverstraw team as they played such well-known semipro teams as the Paterson Silksocks, Black Yankees, Philadelphia Greys and the Bushwicks … Shankey played professionally in the Pennsylvania County League … he played in exhibition games against major league Hall of Famers such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Frankie Frisch … after his ballplaying days, Shankey served as assistant football coach at Haverstraw High from 1930 to 1932; the 1930 club won the county championship … Shankey worked as a civil engineer for the U.S. Department of State.
