1990 honoree … 1947 Spring Valley H.S. graduate … pillar of the wrestling community in Rockland for five decades … his stature was achieved through various roles: athlete, coach, official, athletic administrator … two-time Rockland County champion for Spring Valley, winning at 103 pounds his sophomore year and at 120 his senior year, and going undefeated both years … placed second at 95 lbs. as a freshman… lost only four matches in four years … also played varsity soccer two years … at New York University, he lost only three matches in three years … coached Spring Valley his senior year at NYU, while student teaching, and had five county champions that season, 1951 … was assistant coach at Penn State while obtaining master’s degree … coached two very successful years at East Meadow H.S. on Long Island, six years as assistant coach to George Fuge at Suffern, and four years at Ramsey (N.J.) H.S., where he started a varsity soccer program and solidified a weak wrestling program … he was Pomona Junior High’s first physical education department chairman and athletic coordinator … Schuster founded the Rockland County Wrestling Officials Association … he officiated innumerable county, sectional and invitational events, as well as soccer games and track meets … was an Eastern Intercollegiate wrestling official as well… judged at the National AAU Wrestling Championships in 1966, and was a table official for the inaugural USA vs. USSR wrestling meet in 1958.
