Maurer Golden Pins Tournament … worked as a writer at The Journal-News (which sponsors the Golden Pins event) for 40 years and his bowling column, “Down the Alley,” was one of the most popular features in the paper … Maurer also made a name for himself in other sports … in baseball, he pitched in semipro leagues, and got to pitch against many major league stars, including Babe Ruth and Frankie Frisch … one of Rockland’s best umpires, he umpired semipro baseball for 15 years, officiating in games involving the New York Black Yankees, Pennsylvania Red Caps, House of David and many other semipro teams … in basketball, he organized the St. Ann’s basketball team of Nyack, which included local luminaries like Ed Greene, Bill Perry, Andy Podraskie and George Rotelli … in football, he managed the Nyack H.S. Alumni team for many years … he organized youth football, basketball and baseball teams … Maurer died in 1959.
