1985 Hall of Fame inductee … arrived in Rockland in 1942, as Suffern H.S. athletic director and football coach … outstanding athlete, coach and sports ambassador and pioneer … as Suffern track and cross country coach from 1945 to 1964, he led the Mounties to six Rockland PSAL titles, five Section 9 track crowns and one sectional cross-country title … his football teams won or shared three PSAL championships … was one of the first Rockland track coaches to bring his teams annually to the famed Penn Relays, starting in 1946 … trailblazing indoor track coach who, as early as 1959, introduced Suffern athletes to the indoor board tracks of Madison Square Garden, the 168th Street Armory and others … introduced the triple jump in Suffern home meets in the late 1950s; by 1963, New York State recognized it as an officially sanctioned event … he was a catalyst in New York State in helping create separate but equal athletic facilities for schoolgirls … was a prime mover in the revival of state intersectional competition, and one of the first to introduce lacrosse to Rockland … in 1953-54, earned a Fulbright Scholarship by U.S. State Department to teach, coach and learn in Middle East and Europe … in 1954 became national coach and Olympic Development chairman of Iraq … as a football player at Sayville (L.I.) H.S., he twice led Suffolk County in scoring and twice was an All-Long Island selection … in track, he was the Long Island 880-yard champion, the Suffolk 100-yard dash champ and three-time All-Long Island choice … at Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.), he led the school to two state Class A football titles as a running back, and was All-New Jersey in basketball and the New Jersey long jump champ … continued to excel at Manhattan College, Cortland State and in Amateur Athletic Union and semipro competition … long-jumped against the great Jesse Owens at the Penn Relays, setting a Cortland record of 23-8 3/4 … St Lawrence is also a Sayville H.S. and Cortland Hall of Famer … he died in 1994 at age 81.
